Meet Our Staff

LeeAnn Linkenhoker

Executive Director

LeeAnn joined the Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing team in April of 2021. She received her B.S. in Exercise Science from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC and her Master's in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from Regis University in Denver, CO. LeeAnn has 16 years of nonprofit experience including with the Colorado "I Have A Dream" Foundation, Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, the YMCA, Greenvale School and Brain Injury Services of SWVA. She is passionate about helping others  and enjoys building partnerships with other nonprofits to help connect resources for those in need.  When not working, LeeAnn enjoys volunteering with the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke, traveling, being crafty or spending time outside with her husband and son. 

Heather Dickey, Au.D.

CCC-A, Audiologist

Dr. Heather Dickey moved to Roanoke and began working at the Center in 2017. She graduated from Marywood University with a B.S. degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Deaf Studies, East Tennessee State University with a M.S. degree in Audiology and University of Florida with an Au.D. in Audiology. Dr. Dickey brings over 18 years of experience in various areas of clinical audiology, including hearing evaluation of children and adults, Central Auditory Processing Evaluation, and Vestibular (dizziness and balance) assessment. 

Additionally, Dr. Dickey has had training in preventing falls through Maine Health’s Partnership for Healthy Aging. She enjoys giving educational presentations about hearing loss, vestibular problems/dizziness and auditory processing. She holds a state license from the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, Board for Hearing Aid Specialists and Opticians and a Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association.

Fun Fact: Dr. Dickey enjoys learning Taekwondo with her sons and is looking forward to earning her black belt soon.

Marty Smolak

Audiology Assistant

Marty joined the Roanoke Valley Speech & Hearing Center in November 2016. She is the Audiology Assistant, assisting the Audiologists and patients with their hearing health care at the Center. She is originally from West Virginia, but relocated to Roanoke in 2012.  She has a wide range of healthcare experience and a passion for helping our clients. She has two sons and one grandson. She enjoys music, gardening, cooking and fishing!

Fun Fact: Marty's other passion is DECORATING! Helping others re-decorate their homes on a budget, Design on a Dime! 

Rebecca Vaughan, M.S.

CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist

Rebecca Vaughan joined the RVSHC team as a Speech-Language Pathologist in March 2020. She brings over five years of experience in pediatric and adult outpatient and home health settings. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Rebecca earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Psychology from Case Western Reserve University. She went on to earn a Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology from MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston, MA. She is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and has a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the America Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). 

Fun Fact: Rebecca enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with her husband, daughter, and dog.

Melissa Patterson, M.S.

CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist

Melissa Patterson has been with the Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center as a Speech-Language Pathologist since 2009. She earned her B.A. degree in Communication Disorders from Marshall University and M.S. degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Radford University. Melissa brings 21 years of experience from a variety of settings, including the school system, nursing home facilities, contract positions, home health, and outpatient clinics. She is also a certified Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) LOUD provider, a voice treatment for individuals with Parkinson's Disease.  She also serves as a Board Member for the Parkinson's Support Group in Roanoke. Her areas of specialty include voice disorders, adult swallowing disorders, aphasia, dysarthria, and cognitive impairment. Melissa holds a state license from the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology and a Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. Her favorite part of her job is helping others communicate and developing relationships with families.

Fun Fact: Melissa loves to read and enjoys camping with her husband and 3 sons!

Akirah Mattox

Speech Language Pathologist

Akirah Mattox joined the RVSHC team in January 2022. She earned her B.A. in Psychology and M. Ed. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Virginia. She is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and is currently in her Clinical Fellowship to earn her Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. 

Akirah enjoys reading and spending time with friends and family whenever she can!

Tanisha Durham

Office Manager

Tanisha began working at the Center in the summer of 2011. She is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School and has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Ferrum University. While at Ferrum, she played basketball and earned  ‘All Time Leading Scorer’.  She is responsible for the front desk reception area and facilitating a happy and pleasant experience for all who visit RVSHC.

Fun Fact: In her free time, Tanisha loves to spend time with her son and daughter riding bikes,  playing cornhole,  or just being together!

Dereck Cummings

Insurance Specialist

Dereck is originally from Maine, but grew up in Roanoke and graduated from Patrick Henry High School. He's worked in a variety of settings within the medical community and spent the past 5 years in the insurance field. Dereck enjoys the fast-paced nature of insurance billing and claims management.  He takes pride in helping clients understand their benefits and navigating challenging insurance situations. 

Dereck has two twin tabby cats and enjoys spending time and creating memories with his niece and nephew.

Fun fact: Dereck likes to hike. You can always find him reading a book in the park.

Charlie Carney

CAOHC Certified, Hearing Conservationist

Charlie joined the RVSHC staff in August 2016. He is our Hearing Conservationist and travels with the Center’s mobile unit to conduct industrial hearing testing for industries with loud noise environments. He is from Greenbrier, West Virginia. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Concord University along with MBA work through Averett.

Fun Fact: He and his wife, Angel, have two daughters, Cate and Sarah. He enjoys reading, fishing, whitewater canoeing, camping and hunting.
