Audiology

It depends on your insurance. Some insurance policies may not cover for the testing unless you have a referral from your physician. Please check if a physician referral is required prior to scheduling your appointment. If your insurance doesn’t cover the test because a referral wasn’t obtained, you will be responsible for the cost. Medicare and Medicare supplement plans, DO require a referral for the hearing evaluation. You may have your doctor fax a referral to our office PRIOR to you hearing evaluation at 540-345-4664.

The exact cost varies depending upon the tests that are performed. Please call our office for additional information.

Your insurance may cover all or part of the fees, which is determined by the benefits of your particular insurance policy. Please call and check with your insurance policy to find out about coverage and if a physician referral is required. Our insurance specialist is also available to call to check eligibility and benefits.

There are sources that can assist in purchasing hearing aids. We work with the Lion’s Club, Starkey HEARNOW Foundation, Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services, and Wells Fargo Health Advantage Payment Plan.

The cost of the hearing aid(s) depends on what hearing aid(s) the audiologist recommends for your specific hearing loss. The audiologist will discuss recommendations and cost during your appointment.

Speech-Language Pathology

You can be seen without having a referral from your doctor. However, if your insurance company is being billed for services rendered, a doctor’s referral may be required for reimbursement. It is your responsibility to obtain the referral prior to being seen. You may call your insurance’s Member Services (phone number should be located on the back of the insurance card) to check if a doctors referral is required. Virginia Medicaid/ Medicaid Managed Care Organizations (Virginia Premier, INTotal Health, Coventry Cares, etc.) and Medicare require a doctor’s referral for the speech-language evaluation and therapy which is needed before your appointment.

The SLP will review the information provided on the case history. The information provided helps the SLP identify areas to evaluate more closely. A variety of methods, including formal and informal tests, observation, parent/caregiver interview, etc. will be used to evaluate communication skills. A hearing screening may also be completed during the evaluation. Selection of testing methods is based on the patient’s individual needs. For the parents of younger children receiving an evaluation, please know the SLP encourages you to be with your child during the evaluation; for parents of older children receiving an evaluation, the SLP encourages you to be with your child during the evaluation or watch in the observation room through a one-way mirror while the therapist works with your child. By the end of the session you should know the therapist’s impressions from the evaluation and have talked about recommendations. Typically, 90 minutes is set aside for the appointment for a child and 60 minutes is set aside for an appointment for an adult

A written report detailing the results from the evaluation will be provided. If therapy is recommended, our insurance specialist will submit prior authorization to your insurance for review. Once we have received insurance information, our office will contact you to schedule speech-language therapy.

Please call our office at 540-343-0165 for information or questions about our speech-language evaluation and therapy fees.
